Green Strategy, Nov 2009

The issue of Climate Change is once again high on the corporate agenda, but this time the focus of attention has shifted decisively from awareness to action. Companies can no longer satisfy stakeholders with claims of consensus building and education and there is a growing acceptance of the need to develop and implement more sustainable ways of operating. The leaders, and there are very few, have made big bold moves. The following pack are achieving incremental improvements, most often on the back of efficiency programmes generating environmental benefits. For most, however, the absence of either legislation, or clear short term commercial benefits, means that boards feel unable to justify action, and sustainability programmes remain on the drawing board.

At Green Strategy 09 we put our heads together, and we heard a broad sense of frustration that sustainability is not moving as fast as we need or want it to, to meet the challenges we face as a world. We looked at where the breakdowns were occurring, where others had achieved success. We looked for a model, for processes, for new operational methods that can work across business to speed up the process and integration of sustainability. This paper seeks to draw out some of the key thoughts and insights from the day.
