We diverge from the conventional approach to carbon management in one important way. We do not encourage organisations to offset unavoidable emissions through the purchase of Certified or Voluntary Emissions Reductions certificates (CER or VER).
We are not convinced by the case for offset certificates and do not believe they have a valid place in genuine carbon reduction strategies. There is too little transparency in the industry and it is too hard to verify that promised carbon cuts are delivered. We therefore question their reliability. And we believe they act as a means of divesting responsibility for emissions and avoiding the real issues. Clients have raised similar concerns.
We developed the Stakeholder Carbon Reduction model (SCR) in response.
It encourages organisations to look beyond their direct organisational boundaries and to enable carbon reduction through their immediate stakeholders. This generates genuine and absolute reductions in Carbon emissions which can be unitised as Stakeholder Emissions Reductions (SERs).
SERs offer clear advantages over CER/VERs in terms of quality, accountability and control, while also demonstrating a genuine commitment to the reduction of GHG emissions in an immediate and tangible way, within the organisations immediate universe. SERs encourage collaborative efforts between organisations and employees, customers and shareholders. We believe they are a far more efficient use of resource and provide benefits with far greater longevity.
The theory behind SERs has been rigorously tested and we have made arrangements with Ernst and Young to provide assurance services if required.
